Should I Cleanse Before or After Holiday Feasts?

December 13, 2011 1:22 pm | health | No comments

Everyone knows that this time of year is synonymous with excess food and drink. Even the most health conscious individuals find themselves eating more during the holiday season because most social gatherings involve sharing food with one another. From work parties to family dinners, it’s likely that you are preparing for extra calories and perhaps even eating foods that you normally would shy away from during the rest of the year.

One consideration many make around this time of year is whether or not to do a personal cleanse or detox before the holidays or wait until after. The truth is that whether or not you cleanse before or after the season is a personal choice that must be made depending on the results you are looking for.

Gwenyth Paltrow brought holiday cleansing into popularity several years ago when she discussed her use of a cleanse program in order to shed unwanted holiday pounds. According to many doctors, detoxifying cleanses can have many benefits and act as a way to reset your body. Cleanses, after all, can be used to improve imbalances within the body, clean your entire system, provide more energy, reduce allergies and disease, and melt away unwanted pounds and symptoms of illness.

So, if you are going to be consuming several cookies, drinks or other holiday goodies during the season, it may be best for you to wait until after the New Year in order to try a detoxifying program. After all, doing so before you consume these less-than-healthy products may prove to be a wasted effort. On the other hand, if your goal is simply to fit into that new, skinny holiday dress, you may want to consider a cleanse regimen before the big office party. Really, it just depends on what your overall motivations are.

So what does a post-holiday cleanse mean? There are various alterations to a detoxing cleanse but most of them involve eliminating gluten, dairy, processed foods, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and flour products. Others may be even more rigorous and require you to eliminate meat, too. Regardless of what cleanse you choose, it is important to stay hydrated and increase the amount of water you are taking in each day. Remember, the purpose is to rid your body of toxins, including alcohol and caffeine so “cheating” with these products during the cleanse will completely ruin whatever progress you wanted to make.

Additionally, you will want to research what cleanse products or diets are available and find one that is right for you. It’s also critical that you talk to your doctor before making any significant changes to your daily healthcare regimen—which includes starting a detoxifying cleanse. Remember that cleansing your body does not mean depriving it of vital vitamins and minerals that it requires to sustain healthy processes each day. Similarly, you will want to make sure to avoid bad health behaviors, such as drug or tobacco use. You will want to remain active and life an overall, healthy lifestyle.

A post-holiday cleanse can be just what you need in order to feel better and get your body a head start on shedding those unwanted pounds. If your New Year’s resolutions include weight loss, reducing cholesterol in your diet, or just eating clean, you may want to consider first beginning with a detox program. Again, consult your doctor before making any of these decisions. Whether you decide to start your detox regimen before or after the holidays, always make sure you are doing it in a safe way. Not every program on the internet is safe for all people. Are you interested in more holiday health tips?

The Process of Claiming Disability

November 30, 2011 4:32 pm | health, Health News | No comments

The process of claiming disability can be long and tedious, therefore requiring the applicant to display a considerable amount of patience to reach the point of receiving benefits. On average, this will entail a period of several months, while in some cases even taking longer than that. So what can you do to ease such frustration? By arming yourself with knowledge of how the process actually works, you can be better prepared for what lies ahead.

Unless you’ve been stricken with a disability such as blindness, more than likely you will be among the 60% or so of applicants who are denied during the first stage of applying. This is due to the fact that those whose job it is to determine your eligibility will be approaching your case with the preconceived agenda of saving the state money. Of course this would never be admitted, but such is proven evident upon proper research.

With your disability denial comes the right to appeal. Depending on who you talk to, your chances either increase the second time around, or decrease significantly.

The third and final chance you have in the process of claiming disability will be a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. This is your last chance to plead your case. But as in most cases involving the law, you’d be better off with representation. So let’s look at your options for such…

Legally, you can acquire the services of an attorney or advocacy group at any stage of applying for disability. With that said, keep in mind that some do not accept first-time applicants. But it really depends on your disability. The law covers a wide variety of conditions that may be eligible for benefits, but like their counterparts, a lawyer or advocate will look over your individual case to determine the potential for winning. The advantage is, you’re much more likely to get a fair assessment. If representation is offered to you, expect an average fee of 25% of your lump sum if they prove successful. Do not accept counsel if they charge a fee despite the outcome of the judgement. They should only be paid if you are paid.

Although the process of claiming disability benefits can be exasperating, keep in mind that as an American it is your right to receive help when an illness hinders your ability to provide for yourself. Be patient. It does get better!

Impaired Drivers and Sobriety Checkpoints

September 14, 2011 8:32 pm | Alcohol Abuse | No comments

During a crackdown on drunk drivers police may use the sobriety checkpoint as a way to take impaired drivers off the road.  During this all drivers may be stopped by the police without any suspicion being evident.  They may also be given DUI tests even though there is no probable cause.  These have involved quite a bit of controversy as the US Constitution states that this is against the rights of the people.  However the Supreme Court has stated that it is acceptable under certain circumstances. Currently ten states do not allow them as they say the violate the constitution and two states do not allow them even though they are not illegal.

DUI sobriety checkpoints are used to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road.  They are usually set up on a temporary basis often during holiday periods when there are traditionally more drunk drivers on the road and usually late at night when statistics show most drunk drivers are on the road.  They are often heavily advertised to prevent fun seekers from even contemplating taking their vehicle on a night out.  At the checkpoint the police will use a system to stop certain cars or in fact stop ever car.

If they are suspicious that impairment exists then they may ask the driver to leave the vehicle and undertake specific tests.  These tests can include walking in a straight line, alphabet recital, touching nose etc.  They may also perform a breath alcohol test.  This helps to determine the amount of alcohol in the blood.  If it is above the legal limit then an arrest may be made.

Statistics have shown that these checkpoints are not effective and that 3 times as many people are convicted of DUI by roving police patrols out looking for suspicious drivers.  However the police state that it is just another way to get the message out that impaired driving will not be tolerated.

The Stress of Financing a Home

July 31, 2011 8:22 pm | health, money | No comments

Buying your first home can be stressful.  In fact because of the large amount of money involved it can turn into a major headache for many families.  And if you are a first time home buyer you may be faced with many terms that are hard for you to comprehend which makes things even more complicated.   Take for example the mortgage.  It is a fairly common term – but what is a mortgage?

Well, the common definition is that it is financing (a loan of money) used to purchase property.  Most people do not have the required savings to pay for a property and thus they take a loan out to pay for it.  Usually the loan comes from a financial institution such as a bank, credit union or financial institution and often involves a middle man who sets up the deal – a mortgage broker.  The lender gains their income from the interest.  It is quite common for lenders to sell the mortgage loan to other parties looking for a continual stream of income that the mortgage provides.

Mortgage loans have a specific interest rate with a designated monthly payment and are usually paid off after a certain period – often 15 or 30 years.   The mortgage contract will set restrictions on the use of the property, home insurance, mortgage insurance and pay off.

When you obtain a mortgage load there are two parts to it – the principal and the interest.  The principal is the original amount of the loan – usually reflecting the amount your pay for the property.  The interest is the financing charge that you pay for borrowing the loan and may be fixed rate or adjustable rate.

If there is a problem paying your mortgage payment repossession or foreclosure of the property may occur.  This has been very common in the USA in the recent past.  Because of the decline in economy many mortgage holders have been unable to make their payments and so there has been a great rise in the amount of property foreclosures.

Presently it can be difficult to be approved for a mortgage loan because of the history of foreclosures around the country.  Lending institutions view the potential risk of foreclosure as greater and so have made qualification for loans more difficult.

Buying a home does not necessarily need to be stressful. A mortgage calculator will help you work out your financing options.

Boost Your Immune System: 6 Sure Fire Ways

April 22, 2011 12:30 pm | health, Health News | No comments

Practitioners of health, purveyors of elixirs, snake oil sales, the latest publications of medical studies. All the above have specific opinions about exactly how the human immune system works. When it comes to not getting sick, or regaining health once illness has set in, one of the best approaches is to know the facts, be a little skeptical, but also be willing to try specific techniques that might provide benefits in light of anecdotal or scientific evidence to the contrary.

One of the first conclusions which must be accepted is the fact that immunity in the body is the result of a vast number of contributing components. This is why it is called a system. The body actually does a rather remarkable job at keeping the nasty things which are responsible for disease from overtaking otherwise healthy persons.

As complex as immunity is, and just as uncertain as is the concepts of whether “boosting” ones immunity is even possible, there are some ways that are generally accepted as providing benefits to the body.

Living Healthy

All the things that are good for the body are likely to help it reinforce its own natural abilities to ward off the diseases germs bring. Some activities which seem to help increase immunity are as follows:

  • Not smoking
  • Reducing saturate fats and increasing vegetable and fiber intake in ones diet
  • Keeping weight at healthy levels by reducing calorie intake and increasing exercise
  • Drinking alcohol in moderation
  • Getting enough rest and sleep
  • Washing hands regularly

Staying Warm In Cold Weather

When mothers tell children to wear a coat because it’s cold outside, there may be some good reasons for the advice. Scientific evidence is thin concerning whether the low temperatures are causing the body to be less effective with regards to fighting infections and other disease. What does seem to be more important is how comfortable a person is while they are experiencing low to extremely low temperatures. If wearing a jacket or coat provides the body with a level of comfort in its surroundings, chance are the immune system is going to work better than if it is cold and uncomfortable.

Don’t Stress Out

A good amount of research has been done by a wide variety of scientist and medical practitioners studying the effects of mental and physical stress on the body. Unfortunately, immunologists have not contributed much in the way of data comparing the effects of stress to immunity.

Common sense and plenty of family remedies, however, provide for a number of treatments which include ant-stress techniques. It makes sense that if the mind or body is working overtime dealing with outside stressors it is unlikely to have the resources to ward off the sickness that can sneak in.

Calming the mind and spirit certainly will not hurt ones immune system, and likely will provide benefits far exceeding the lack of scientific proof of its effectiveness.

Supplements and Herbal Remedies

This is one of those unproven areas of immunity boosting treatments. Though research is constantly being done to show efficacy of one claim or another, much of what is touted as immunity boosting can only be described as conjecture.

One of the major challenges with proving an herb or vitamin supplement as being universally true has to do more with how individuals react to specific ingredients. What works for one may certainly not work for another.

Stay Young

Of course, this is easier said than done. Time waits for no one, apparently. While stopping the aging process may not be possible, keeping the mind and body supple, agile and thinking young may well have the immunity boosting effects one is looking for.

Some studies show that as the human body ages it has increasing difficulty fighting infections and preventing diseases from wreaking havoc. Mental acuteness seems to have positive effects on the body’s perception of its age. Stay sharp, and continue thinking young, healthy thoughts.

Be Skeptical With an Open Mind

Very few scientific studies show anything conclusive when it comes to truly providing for immune system boosting. As such, maintaining a healthy skepticism regarding popular remedies and cures may be sound advice.

At the same time, understanding the general deficiency in conclusive evidence regarding immunity boosting solutions means there are a number of possible avenues one might choose to explore. Be wise, seek additional information where lacking and be willing to try something new to see if it just might work.

Growing Need for Drug Treatment and Intervention Programs

March 16, 2011 8:00 pm | Alcohol Abuse | No comments

No one really wants to consider the fact that his or her friend, family member or even a co-worker might have a chemical abuse problem. However, the disturbing reality is that drug and alcohol addiction continues to affect millions of people and the problem shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, there has been an increase in the types of drugs that individuals are developing dependence issues on, and the progress in pharmaceutical recourses and prescription options is part of the reason, unintentionally and unfortunately, for this.

Legally prescribed pain medications as well as certain psychotropic prescriptions have a high addiction potential and while most of the people who take them for legitimate reasons don’t intend to become addicted, the possibility is still there.

There is also the potential for the narcotic and high potency prescription pain medicines to be sold on the street or black market. This contributes to the dependency and addiction potential of these medicines. Meanwhile, the standard illegal street drug varieties are still available and widely used. And today, drug intervention and treatment programs offer services to a more diverse population of users, and the treatment models used apply to different categories of drugs. And while it seems that as long as there are drugs that have an addition or dependency potential available, there will be the need for treatment programs and interventions, and acknowledging that there is a problem is always the first step toward recovery.

Relocating to San Antonio

December 12, 2010 4:10 pm | Relocation | No comments

Deciding to relocate is a big decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are lots of things to think about –where to live, cost of living, schools, jobs, adjusting to a new area–the list can go on and on. But as challenging as it may seem at the time, relocating to San Antonio is definitely worth it.

San Antonio has a lot to offer both singles and families. From the River Walk and the San Antonio Zoo to a wide variety of restaurants and public services, San Antonio has something for everyone.

Most people, when they first relocate, choose to move into temporary housing until they can research San Antonio real estate and neighborhoods a little more. But once you have decided to invest, there are many great neighborhoods to buy or build into.

Cost of living is often a big concern for everyone–no matter where you are relocating. Of course a lot of this will depend where you are coming from –the cost of living in California is considerably higher than the cost of living in San Antonio. It also depends on the type of job you have and what standard of living you are hoping to maintain. You can research the cost of utilities, property tax, etc. online so you have a pretty good idea before you move.
