With the death of Michael Jackson, drug abuse, and especially prescription drug abuse has come into the spotlight. The King of Pop seems to have had a very advanced addiction to painkillers. One being an especially strong one called Demerol. Jackson never was in drug rehab or any kind of treatment facility, so it I unknown if he could have benefitted from this kind of help.

Jackson may have needed dual-diagnosis treatment, because it is apparent that he had more than just a drug problem. Dual diagnosis is when not only addiction is treated but also whatever else could be mentally wrong or unstable with a patient as well.

What is coming into question as well, after the death of Jackson, is how doctors prescribe medication. It has been reported that Jackson may have been using other names to have prescriptions filled or pseudonyms. Also, it has come to light that Jackson’s doctor may have been less than qualified to be prescribing these kinds of medications. At one point the family was thinking about charging Jackson’s doctor with murder. But those charges are unlikely to come to fruition.

What the death of Jackson has done is bring prescription drug abuse into the limelight and has made people realize that prescription drug abuse is a problem in this country. It could almost be seen as an epidemic. It is a lot easier to become a prescription drug addict, especially for teens, because prescription drugs are so easily accessible.

Michael Jackson’s death, however tragic it is, is still a learning experience for others. Perhaps it will help people realize, especially parents that prescription drug abuse is a problem and something that they have to watch out for. Michael Jackson has long been someone who has been out of the music world and it could have been because of his drug abuse. It just goes to show that people will get what they want, no matter how deadly it is.
